How Sprockets Work in Escalators
The escalator drive sprocket is mounted on the main drive shaft at the upper landing, powered by a worm or helical gearbox connected to the main motor. It engages the step chain — a pair of heavy-duty roller chains connected to each step axle. As the drive sprocket rotates, it pulls the step chain in a continuous loop, carrying steps upward on the passenger side and returning them underneath. The return sprocket (tension sprocket) at the lower landing guides the chain around the turn and maintains proper chain tension via spring or gravity tensioners.

Installation
